Black Lives Matter
BY KATE SIMPSON
In response to the murder of George Floyd and the recent protests, we at Wasafiri want to express our support for the fight against systemic racism in the USA and beyond.
Racism is not just about a few ‘bad apples’. Racism is a system that we are all a part of, and changing that system needs action from us all. Through our work we know just how hard, but also how possible systemic change is. We have seen what happens when a small passionate group of people galvanise a movement; but we know that lasting change at scale needs the quiet masses to add their support and to be willing to change. We know that silence is not an option.
Racism is not unique to the USA. We know, through our work, what happens when groups of people are constantly excluded and marginalised and violence used against them. If we want to live and work in peaceful sustainable communities then we need justice and fairness for everyone. We commit to using our voice, collectively and personally, to talk about racism, to challenge injustice and admit when we are not doing enough.
We know that until black lives matter all lives will not matter.
